One of my heroes in science, Carl Sagan, astrophysicist, exobiologist and science communicator testifying before congress about the greenhouse effect and climate change in 1985 (!), almost 40 years ago. Her predicted it all already then. In a time where CO2 and the effects on the climate were still ignored or even neglected by many.
He was also responsible for the plaques on Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 and the Voyager Golden Record that were prepared for potential extraterrestrial intelligence.
His ancestors were polish jews from Ukraine that emigrated to the US. Unfortunately, he died much too early at the age of 62 on December 1996.
More than ever, we today need more science communication to inform society of scientific principles and knowledge. This is why we want to enable our young scientists to do so and will develop the Austrian Science Communication Center together with @oeaw.at and @univienna in the first district of Vienna close to ÖAW.
